USS Scorpion Search Operations Phase II (Apache, White Sands, Trieste)
I took these photos during Phase II Scorpion Operations in 1969. At the time, I was the XO on the the USS Apache (ATF-67). We towed the USS Whitesands (ARD-20) with the baythsacphe Trieste (DSV-1) in her drydock bay. The cruise and on-site operation in the Atlantic lasted from January 1969 until late November (early Dec??) 1969. . . . . (Click on photos to enlarge the image.)
After over a million words spread over a couple thousand pages, I am going to have to discontinue my dozen Blogger blogs and shift to WordPress. You can find my new consolidated blog at
www.MatrixMasters.com ... I host the Psychedelic Salon podcasts, which may be found at www.PsychedelicSalon.org ... In these podcasts you can hear talks by people such as Terence McKenna, Alex Grey, Daniel Pinchbeck, Sasha Shulgin, Timothy Leary, Nick Sand and many others.
The section of this site under the At Sealink on the left side of each page, will give you a little idea of what it was like on the U.S. Navy's longest tow.
The Shore Leave in the Azoressection is a collection of photos taken during our two stops at the port of Ponta Delgada in the Azores. Having the opportunity to see this beautiful land made the long cruise seem even more worth while to a sea-tired crew.
The photo section labeled "Panama Canal Transits" via the link on the left side of each page, will give you a little idea of what it was like to be on the Apache as it towed White Sands through the Panama Canal . . . twice!
TheSan Diego Homecoming section has a few shots of our arrival back home as well as some group photos of Apache's crew.
The Misc. Apache Photos section has a couple of pictures that didn't fit anywhere else.
Our unit "patch", although I don't think I ever saw an actual patch of this drawing.
